Nick Evans
Financial Planner
I started out with Barclays Bank in 1998, and then worked for a few years in Portman Building Society in St Albans as a Norwich Union tied adviser.
Working for national firms was a really good way to get my qualifications and some experience. But ultimately these were target-driven roles, and I soon got frustrated with the transactional nature of the work.
I became an independent financial adviser (IFA) in 2004. Despite a hard start with no clients and no income (and my first child on her way), it worked out to be a great move. I could start to build relationships – in fact, some of my very first clients are still with us today.
In 2010, I had my first major epiphany. I realised that financial planning wasn’t about money at all. It’s about what money can do for you.
I realised that all that stuff about which pension plan was better than the other just didn’t matter as much as I thought it did. What really matters is your own actions and giving them a sense of direction. From that epiphany, One Life Wealth Planning was born.
I often say that the value of advice is not measured, but felt. When done properly, it makes a real difference to people’s lives, and that gives me such a buzz. Now, I cannot think of anything else I would rather do.
Outside of work, I’m very active. I love running and cycling with my friends, particularly through the woods around Ashridge and Potten End. I’ve also recently started lake swimming, and have just completed my first ever triathlon, a half Ironman.
I’m married to Veronique and we have two daughters.
